ARE THESE THINGS HOLDING YOU BACK FROM BECOMING A HEALTHIER HAPPIER YOU?

1

But I’m too old to do weights.

You are never too old to start resistance training. Studies have proven that regular strength training can delay or reverse frailty.
2

Only men do weight lifting.

Be it lifting a box and placing it on a shelf, carrying shopping bags, moving a chair or sofa, one requires muscles and the strength to carry out these tasks. While most women prefer cardio, they also need to focus on strength training and weightlifting to be able to carry out these tasks just as effectively as men.
3

I will pull a muscle doing it.

Resistance training can be dangerous if your technique is not right. But using a Personal Trainer will ensure you are fully warmed up, your technique is correct, you are fully assessed before taking part, a program is written just for you and they will talk with any medical advisors you are currently working with be it a physiotherapist, a chiropractor or your GP.
4

Resistance training will leave me looking like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

There are many reasons why a woman won’t gain the kind of bulk a man would. One of them being the male hormone called testosterone. Men are genetically designed to have more muscle mass and physical strength than women. At best, strength training will make a woman gain some lean mass and reduce extra body fat, resulting in her looking more toned and improving posture.
5

I’m too weak to lift weights.

There is no such thing as being too weak to lift weights. If you can lift anything you can weight train. Resistance training is all about the form and technique, and a gentle increase of load as you become proficient at what you’re doing.
6

I don’t have time to exercise.

Sometimes this may be the case, but mostly this is a choice. This is more about prioritising what is important to us. Exercising will improve your health, make you sexier, bring you confidence, it will change your life. So make time! Personal Training done right also saves you time, following a program designed for you means you work on the things you need to to gain the right results.
7

The gym is full of young people who look good, I will feel silly.

Personal Training does what it says on the tin (when done right), it’s personal, it’s all about you. No matter your age, shape, sex, experience, knowledge, it’s all about you. Your Personal Trainer will support you and encourage your progress, there is no room to feel silly. You should leave feeling good, and each time gaining more confidence until your self-consciousness has gone.

FAQ’s

Isn’t 1:4 training just the same as a class?

No! Each person in the session has a training program that’s designed to suit their body’s needs. The Personal Trainer will be with you throughout your session to guide you through each exercise, and spot you when doing free weights. Keeping the numbers at 4 means that we can give you all the attention you need, without the intensity of a 1:1 session. Programs will be reviewed once a month to develop your training.

What if others in the 1:4 sessions are fitter than me?

This really doesn’t matter, and is actually a great way to encourage your own training. We are a friendly gym that attracts very honest and genuine clients. There will never be an air of competitiveness, but more of commardier and supportiveness. You should always work within your own parameters and only ever set your goals to become a better you, not someone else.

Why should I use a Personal Trainer?

Simply put, to reach your goals quicker. Some people are happy to follow their own programme in their own time and place; for those who lack the time, or the motivation, or the energy to train effectively on their own, a Personal Trainer can be the answer. The support, advice and encouragement comes with safe exercise technique to help you avoid injuries.

When do I need a Personal Trainer?

When you are overweight, when you are underweight, when you are unfit, when you want to get fitter, when you have just had a baby, when you are in training, when you are bored with training, when the kids have left home, when the jeans don’t fit, when you are too busy to keep fit, when you are going skiing, when Christmas has happened, when summer is about to happen, when aerobics has got boring, when you can’t avoid the mirror, when you always avoid the scales, when you want to!

How often should I train?

There is no ‘should’ – you can achieve results working out in a gym, in the park, or at home. It is more a matter of availability and of convenience for you, particularly if you have special rehabilitative needs, which may require special equipment. The knowledge on how to train is more important here.

Will my Trainer put me on a diet or stop me smoking/drinking?

Most Personal Trainers are fully aware that in order to change an unhealthy lifestyle you have to work within it. You will find that many Personal Trainers can give you nutritional and lifestyle advice – whether you take it is up to you. We are only with you a few hours a week, but the fitter you become, the better you will treat your body as a natural consequence.

Can I set the time I work out?

You are the client and so should be able to train when you want. We always try our hardest to get you a time that will work around your life. However, do remember that trainers will have existing clients and so your first choice may not be available so it’s best to be flexible. If you’re changing your training time, always give at least 24 hours notice – otherwise you’ll be charged.

What happens during a Personal Training session?

A personal training session will last for one hour. This will follow along the lines of a brief warm-up followed by your main training programme where you will focus on your goals using cardiovascular, strength or flexibility exercises. Finally there will be a cool down or relaxation period. Any programme may vary from one session to the next according to the clients’ needs and progress.

Does a Personal Trainer ask questions about your lifestyle?

The nature of personal training is such that it incorporates your needs, goals and preferences. The trainer will need to ask some initial questions during the consultation, which probe the demands that are placed on you from your job or lifestyle. Typically the first session will include questions about :

    • Basic personal details
    • Medical background
    • Fitness background
    • Lifestyle factors (e.g. smoking or drinking)
    • Nutritional habits (you may be asked to keep a diary)
    • Personal goals and objectives in relation to fitness

So as you can see a trainer looks at more than just the fitness or exercise component of your life. Any professional trainer should be able to provide information and advice about nutrition, stress management, motivational techniques and then be able to refer you on to others where the need may arise (Chiropractics or Massage say.)

I have a disability/medical issues, how will Personal Training benefit me?

As Personal Trainers we have a degree of knowledge surrounding various medical conditions. We also read widely around disability. As with any body, form and technique is the most important factor to training, so this would be applied to you also. We can adapt exercises to benefit any condition and gain you results. We will also work very closely with existing practitioners within your medical team in order to provide programming that is suitable and safe for you.
